Hello,

Firstly I would like to apologise; I'm a complete newbie, very little knowledge and I'm certain this has been covered often in this forum already countless times, but my lack of skills haven't made locating this possible for me so far - I've spent at least over an hour looking through the FAQs, Best Links and How To Search threads.

Can someone point me to a simple labelled diagram of the engine bay for a 2001 E39 530i please? I need to figure out what the part to the left of the ATF container is urgently, and I haven't got a Haynes manual yet for this car (I live in the UK).

Many thanks and again, I'm sorry for being a dunse and not knowing how to search/find effectively here.

Cheers,

Simon

spot on, thanks man! So I've noticed oil dripping out from here, from just under the lid. I haven't touched it, but would anyone know if I'd be ok to try and tighten it, or do I need to be wary of something else - ie; overtightening, air getting in from the engine running with this lid a little loose or perhaps excess oil dripping below the oil filter?

Thanks again everyone

Whatever you end up doing, do not try and retigjhten the bolts, easy to strip them. You may want to replace the gasket which is part #6 in the diagram, that is a common leak point.
Better get familiar with how to do this before you jump in.
You may need a new o'ring for the oil filter housing cap.
O'ring comes with filter when you buy a new one.

I would replace the filter. New filters ?always come with an o-ring for the cap. I wouldn't try tightening it further because filters are cheap compared to cracked filter housings.

Oil seeping out of the lid? Or oil dripping from the housing?

If it is oil seeping out of the lid, most likely the o-ring was installed incorrectly onto the black lid. If oil dripping from the housing, which you will not see easily, is a much more involved job.

thanks for the advice and patience with me everyone, really appreciated. The oil's definitely leaking from just under the lid where it screws on - I can visibly see drips when the engine is running. It's actually due an oil change soon anyhow, so will take it into my mechanic tomorrow for a brief look over - he's a huge fan of the E39.

I fear how long this has been leaking for, and hope it hasn't caused much damaged elsewhere - fingers crossed..!

Cheers,

Simon
